How to check a lawyer in Brazil
- Ask for the full name and the OAB number (the Brazilian Bar registration, with the state).
- Look it up in the national registry of lawyers, cna.oab.org.br: the name, the state and the registration must match.
- Ask for the fee in a written contract before any work begins.
- Pay only into the account named in the contract, never to a third party or a "fee for the judge".
- Ask for copies of what is filed: Brazilian court proceedings are electronic and can be checked.
