What can be done in Brazil
- A police report (notícia-crime) filed in Brazil, through a lawyer with a power of attorney. In fraud cases the investigation depends on the victim formally asking for it (Penal Code, art. 171, § 5º).
- Online fraud carries 4 to 8 years of imprisonment (Penal Code, art. 171, § 2º-A); extortion is art. 158.
- If the money went by Pix, the Brazilian bank of the scammer can block what is still there through the Central Bank return mechanism, requested by the payer's bank.
- In the criminal case, the judge may freeze assets and set a minimum compensation (Code of Criminal Procedure, art. 387, IV); cooperation with other countries goes through the Federal Prosecution Service.
