Victim of a crime in Brazil
A robbery on holiday, an assault, a relative killed. The victim, or the family, does not have to stay in Brazil to follow the case: a lawyer here follows the investigation, joins the criminal case next to the prosecutor and asks for compensation.

What the law allows
- The victim, or the spouse, parents, children or siblings if the victim died, may join the case as assistant to the prosecution (Code of Criminal Procedure, arts. 268 to 273).
- The sentence may set a minimum amount of compensation for the damage (art. 387, IV).
- The victim must be told when the accused is arrested or released and of the hearing dates (art. 201, § 2º).
