Locate a prisoner in Brazil

Knowing where the person is and their procedural situation is the first step of the defense. We do it remotely, in English.

A prisoner in Brazil is located through the SEEU enforcement system, the BNMP prison database of the CNJ, and the court holding the case. Family can request information; a retained lawyer reads the full file — facility, case number, regime and deadlines — which is what the defence actually needs.

Where and how the search is done

SEEU — the criminal enforcement system where the case and the facility are recorded.

BNMP / CNJ — the national database of warrants and prison monitoring.

Enforcement court — the court with jurisdiction over the facility where the prisoner is held.

With that information, the next step is the defense. See what to do if a relative is detained in Brazil.

Four kinds of search — what we actually do

Someone in custody

where the person is being held, which court has jurisdiction and what stage the case is at (SEEU, BNMP/CNJ and the enforcement court).

Missing person or an old case

establishing the official outcome — records with the Federal Police, Interpol notices and public registries, including cases from decades ago.

Heir search

forensic genealogy for probate abroad: finding and documenting heirs located in Brazil.

Locating a party for service of process

for foreign lawyers who need a defendant or party found and served in Brazil.

What you receive: a certificate of searches — every database, registry and authority consulted, with dates and outcomes. It is a document you can file in your own proceedings abroad. We do not promise a result; we document the diligence.

How you appoint a lawyer without travelling

You do not need to come to Brazil, and you do not need a middleman. The appointment is made remotely and the case runs electronically.

Power of attorney

signed where you are. For use in court it is apostilled (Hague Convention, in force in Brazil) and translated by a sworn translator — we tell you exactly which documents are needed.

Documents

identity papers and whatever you have of the case: case number, court, full name, mother's name and date of birth of the person involved.

How the case runs

filings are electronic (PJe, eproc, e-SAJ, SEEU) and hearings can be held by videoconference. You follow the case through the lawyer, in your language.

Scope in writing

what the firm will do — and what it will not — is set out in writing before the work starts.

Perguntas frequentes

How do you locate a prisoner in Brazil?

Through the SEEU (Unified Electronic Enforcement System), the BNMP (National Prison Monitoring Database) of the CNJ, and the competent enforcement court. A retained lawyer checks the records and confirms the facility and the procedural situation.

Who can request the search?

The family can request information, but access to the full case file belongs to the retained lawyer, who obtains the complete details (case number, facility, regime, deadlines).

Is this enough to request release?

Locating is the first step. With the case file in hand, the lawyer assesses the custody hearing, pre-trial detention and enforcement incidents (regime progression, parole).
